Quarter 2 Week 6: Half a Tank in Hand is Worth Two in the Bush

It’s almost the halfway point of quarter 2 of year 5 of Hammer the Backlog, the weekly mini painting, accountability and productivity blog. It’s nearly holiday and birthday time for me, which is usually a time of slight slacking and the occasional unavoidable addition to the backlog due to gifts. Will that happen this year? Yes. But still, read on for further updates and forget that I spoiled things.

Alrighty, a bit of, thankfully not unexpected, red in the ledger this week. I originally planned on the Plague Burst Crawler being 2 to 3 weeks of work, so assigned it 10 Hammer the Backlog points. Side note, I do not like Games Workshop’s new, everything must be highly trademarkable, naming scheme for modern models. I will be calling the Plague Burst Crawler the PBC for the rest of this, as much as acronyms pain me.

The PBC is definitely going to take two weeks. This first week was spent on clean up and base colours, leaving next week for details, highlights, and taking things a step or two further on colour schemes, since it is somewhat of an army centrepiece model.

Since it was my birthday this week, we have the now semi-annual unexpected additions to the backlog. My lovely lady wife, long suffering Mick-listener that she is, got me the Rogue Trader and entourage that were originally part of the Rogue Trader Kill Team update about 10 years ago now.

I have lusted after these models since then, since as regular readers will know, I am much more drawn to the spaceships, hive cities and back alleys of 40k than I am to the world shaking frontlines of battle. A Space Marine is much more exciting if meeting one by chance is either the most terrifying thing that you’ve ever seen, or a once in a lifetime blessing of a vision of the emperor’s angels.

Since I have quite a few “space weirdos” now, and most of the stuff that has been released for the TTRPG Imperium Maledictum, it’s looking highly likely that one of next year’s trays will be my space weirdos, or my Dramatis Personea Tray, as I am considering calling it. Is it too soon to be thinking about next year’s trays?

Good old Rud’Mhor the PBC. This week was all about clearing him up, getting him rebased and getting down the main colours on the green armour.

He followed the exact scheme that I’ve been using for my Plague Marines for the last 5 weeks. I suppose it’s a good thing that I’m still enjoying painting it, since I do have quite a few more weeks to go of it!

I think the scheme looks even better on the tank than it did on the marines, since the large flat panels let the colour changes from bright yellow to dark green and into brown, and the finish contrast from shiny to highly matt, be more visible without looking unintentionally muddy.

The rest of the week will be spent on the gold parts, then the edge highlighting of everything, and whatever time left will be spent on jizzing him up a little with extra details around the fleshy areas, and maybe a little bit more rust and verdigris.

I popped the discord link that Jim and I have been sharing into the blog post last week. I turned out to be surprisingly popular with quite a few people hopping up on it and joining in with quarterly targets of their own. How exciting.

Feel free to hop up on it and join us. No need to make any quarterly or annual commitments, feel free to just post your models or roast Jim for taking too long to get his Custodes bikes finished.

That’s it from me for another week. See you next week for a finished PBC (dammit)

Best of eggs!
