Welcome back to the weekly mini painting, productivity and accountability blog, henceforth (and previously) known as Hammer the Backlog. I am Mick, the one who hammers the backlog, and you join me this week on a week that is going to look pretty bad on paper, but which was actually super productive.
SCORECARD
Ok, first hurdle this week is that I don’t have a scorecard image, as we are still working on the app and while it’s being updated I wasn’t able to grab the scorecard image this week. Having said that, it would be in the red this week for models completed, with a measly 2 done.
Well, seemingly measly. The two models I actually finished are the last two wyches. But the rest of the week wasn’t idle. I also got the raider pilot and gunner fixed up, replaced their missing parts and got them about half way painted.
And I also spent a lot of time on the raider itself. It took a good while to strip it, as it was obviously too big to just dunk in the biostrip. So I took an old paint brush and brushed the biostrip into every nook and cranny before placing the whole thing in a ziplock bag.
A few days later I gave it a scrub. I don’t know if the biostrip weakened the plastic even more, or if these old raider models were always just incredibly easy to damage. I suspect the latter. But, several more pieces broke off while I was cleaning.
I also couldn’t quite get all of the biostrip and paint out of the details, so the next step was a blast with pure IPA from my airbrush at maximum pressure. This got it cleaned up nicely. Then I spent a few hours struggling to get everything reassembled and sanded.
Then the whole thing got a blast with Mr. Surfacer 1000, which was left to dry. Then the final undercoat was Mechanicus Standard grey. That showed a little bit of crazing on the flat surfaces, so a gentle sanding was needed. Which broke off more parts. It was hard to be a Dark Eldar hobbyist in the 90s.
Anyway, once all that was fixed, the raider was ready for its final colour scheme, which, at the time of writing, I still haven’t quite decided on.
THIS WEEK’S MODELS
This week’s models are the last two Wyches from my original collection. I think, somehow, I left the best two till last. They were the easiest to paint and have, in my opinion, the best faces and hair.
I went for dark green hair on one and black on the other to balance out the squad. I guess if I got three more to bring the unit up to 10 I would go for purple or pink hair for the final ones? Maybe blue?
I realise now that the only iconic wych weapon I am missing is the falcion and razersnare. Did they make female wyches with those weapons? If they only made male versions, is that why I didn’t get them in 1998?
HAMMER THE FRONTLOG
No hammer the frontlog this week as Jim had the temerity to go on holiday and not take his models with him? Where is his dedication, I hear you ask. I do not know, gentle reader, I simply do not know.
Well, thanks for reading that, I’m off to get to work on finishing the raider and balancing out the quarter’s painted model count.
