Hello there, fellow puss filled grubs, and welcome back to Hammer the Backlog, the weekly disease spreading, productivity and accountability blog. And mini painting! This week has been a classic week 2 week. Things are moving along, everything from this quarter is still new and fresh, and I have lots to talk about, if relatively little to actually report.
SCORECARD
All in the green this week, with 3 Plague Marines painted for 2 points each. That’s 6 points. That’s one over target! That means I’m probably only going to do two next week, evening out at 5 a week.
The biggest issue of the week is that the Hammer the Backlog app borked out on me, wiping the weekly progress and yearly and annual targets. I think the energy has gone from the app project sadly, as both Harry and I have other stuff going on in our lives. I’m not calling it dead just yet though, it might just stage a comeback!
In the meantime I’ve made a private Discord server to keep my targets and conversations in one place.
The only other thing I’ve really been doing this week is focus on getting nicer pictures. My high light, almost washed out look has been great for retro models, since it reminds people of the bad old days of pretty poor, low quality White Dwarf photography. But it just doesn’t work with modern models.
For that reason, I bought a nice new purple photography background to match the Death Guard codex, painted up a baseplate and some scenery and have been working on getting better photos. The lights I have are probably still a bit too harsh and I am still, in the year of our lord 2026, holding the phone in my hand when I take pictures. So I think a small tripod and some diffusers are next.
THIS WEEK’S MODELS
This week’s models are three more Plague Marines. Or, technically speaking for the quarterly target, 2 more Plague Marines and 1 more Extra Plague Marine, since he comes from the easy to build set.
Once again, this is the third time I’ve painted this particular model after Conquest Magazine and Blackstone Fortress. I know he wasn’t in the Dark Imperium boxed set, hence his status as “extra”. I somehow have another one of these to paint? I think I might have been accidentally sent two copies of one of the issues of Conquest when I was collecting it.
The guy with the big horns and the drawn sword is my favourite Plague Marine so far. He has a nice balance of materials, armour, flesh and horns that I like, and he turned out to be the best at painting too.
These really don’t take all that much time to do, considering how detailed they are. That is 100% down to the fact that they are Death Guard, and very forgiving/encouraging of some degree of messiness and randomness.
HAMMER THE FRONTLOG
Jim got a tank for his birthday and has started and almost finished painting it. It has been so funny watching Jim learn to paint wholly new things so rapidly. He is making very quick progress, including speedrunning all the different ways of fucking up and fixing things.
Anyway, tank should be finished next week!
