Quarter 4 Week 5 Update: Shot Through the Heart

The Majestic Eagle’s call to you all, dear readers, and welcome back to Hammer the Backlog, the weekly mini painting, accountability and productivity blog. Did I manage to stay on target this week? Or did my shot go wide? Only one way to find out!

Another bullseye this week, fully in the green. I managed to keep my target in my sights and actually got these week’s models done a day early. Probably for the best as next week’s models are going to be…. Complicated, let’s just say.

It might be a stretch to count the Eagle Claw bolt thrower and crew as five points rather than four, as, unlike an empire cannon, it only has two crew not three. And the body of the machine itself is not overly complicated either.

Even though it is only week five of the quarter, a lot of the bulk units for this quarter’s targets are already done. I only have 15 models left to paint, and 8 weeks to paint them. They are a heck of a 15 models, though.

I am a little torn about what’s next. I might just be procrastinating about starting on the tricky Dragon Princes, but I am a little bit tempted by the fact that I have an extra day, essentially, to actually get stuck in and finish the last five seaguard while the techniques are fresh.

This week’s models are the eagle claw bolt thrower and two crew elves.

For the bolt thrower, I wanted it to be a bit “eagley”. So I painted the body white and saved the gold for the most decorative elements.

I painted the “wood” sections with two thin coats of Kharak Stone. Then I washed where the wood met the metal with Agrax Earthshade. I tidied up with another coat of Kharak Stone, before giving a broad but light highlight of Ushabti Bone. Simple and effective.

This model might not be that much older than the rest of the models in the army. The plastic Eagle Claw seems to have come out in 7th or 8th edition, and it is one of those very rare models that is just a plastic version of an existing metal kit. Not really a reimagining or an update, just a plastic version.

That leaves this model feeling slightly plain and simple compared to the excessive details on everything else in the army.

The two crew are kitbashes, I think? Why? I have no idea. Maybe I wanted them to look more like seaguard? But they have some odd gaps and fragile bits that only make sense if they are kitbashes.

I painted them in the exact same scheme as my seaguard, except I gave them the seas green sashes as they were otherwise lacking in “sea-ey” bits. Oceanic? Sea-like?

I think that’s everything for this week? Let me leave you with this quarter’s army so far. And yes, I did put in the rest of the seaguard.

Best eggs!
