Quarter 2 Week 11 Update: A Knight in the Middle of Town!

Bonjour! Or should I say well lad? Lookit, either way, welcome back to Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer mini painting, productivity and accountability blog, where I attempt to paint nearly 30 years of accumulated minis before the government bans lead, white metal, plastic and photoreactive resins. Each week, on Thursday, I have a short meeting (with myself!) and then report the results of that meeting to you, the reader. For the sake of public accountability.

There is mercifully little to report this week (OR IS THERE?), so let’s get straight down to the scorecard!

Lovely! All green again for another week. With a nice, single, retro model to focus on for the week I was really able to focus on getting him painted up the way I wanted him and not have to rush any of the stages.

This has been the least pressure I’ve been under for this whole quarter! I love old Bretonnian models.

Having made good, if slow, progress on the elves over the last few weeks, I also have a nice repository of photos of the box set, elf army, and a couple of battle scenes to pepper across the various social media channels.

So, week in the green, let’s have a look at the quarterly rocks.

The high elves are still at 80% done and on track. With just the Prince left to do, and two weeks to do him, I have no doubt that this one will be hit. In fact, I’m going to start the tidying up process on the model pretty much as soon as I finish typing this up.

On the other hand, the battle report has slipped behind schedule a little. I wanted to have it played by today. Since I only finished the general/BSB today, that wasn’t possible. So I’m hoping to book my arch nemesis Jim in for a full day of battling next weekend to get it played and filmed in a single day. It’s coming up to Christmas and the man has kids, so wish me luck!

Look gang, I’ve talked at length about how my set of brand new in box Grail Knights that I got off of adverts.ie for €20 are the jewel of my collection.

A year and a half ago I even painted the first of them in the colours and scheme of the city of Valentia, where I was on holiday with my lovely lady. There and then I decided that I would paint the entire set in the colours of real places that caught my eye.

Well, the next place that caught my eye was the equally lovely town of Midleton, Co. Cork. It might be slightly less exoctic and exciting than Valencia, but they have a fine crest!

There was nothing particularly new or challenging in painting this guy, to be honest. I stuck to my usual processes and recipes and trusted in the process.

The only bit that might have gone wrong was getting all of the lines and checkers symmetrical. I did actually misscentre the cross on the front left side of the horses comparison, but in the end the rider’s foot ended up covering it anyway!

Freehanding in the year of our lord 2024 is so, soooo much easier than it used to be. Corax white, watered down, is a dream paint to do detail work with and contrast colours flow so well from the brush it is like working with inks, but without the glossy finish and drying time. In the olden days trying to get the paint to flow off the brush well enough to give you bold lines, but without it turning chalky or drying on the bristles was an absolute knightmare (pun intended).

I haven’t decided yet which of the grail knights is going to be the general and which is going to be a hero for next week’s battle report.

Well, it looks like that’s it from me this week. See you next week for a bit of work on the Prince on Griffon and hopefully a few more jungle scenery pieces painted. Maybe a hill?

Wait a second….

  1. New knight looks fantastic, well done! Your freehanding is really neat too, and looks especially good on the red knight. I’d be tempted to make him your general. 🙂
