Quarter 1 Week 13 Update: It’s Thanquol’s Lair, We All Just Live in it

Hello and welcome back to the final week of quarter one of year 3 (!) of Hammer the Backlog. A bittersweet week this week, with all of our panting targets for the quarter hit and a couple of great armies completed, but at the same time a rock killed this quarter, the stress of learning how to make a new video type taking its toll and a project I would love to have finished languishing half completed!

Read on, gentle reader, for the final update of quarter 1.

Well, would you look at that! A little bit of red in the ledger this week, as with the Besiegers banner bearer finally painted (thanks mostly to Emiel from Thanquol’s Lair swooping in and sending me a shield with one week to go!), only one complete model done.

However! With the model done, my childhood Dog’s of War army is now 100% complete! All nine box sets and the mounted general blister pack finished! This has been a labour of love over the last two and a half years, and it feels deeply (DEEPLY) satisfying. It was so satisfying in fact, that it convinced me to make a “Completing my childhood dream army” video, which I now deeply regret!

Making the video, which included a bit of history, a bit of a model showcase and some painting, was a huge learning curve in a week. I will be completely honest here and say that it is only about half finished as I am writing this, but since I am writing this on Wednesday this week rather than Thursday, there should be plenty of time to get it finished. You will know more than me, by checking to see if it is linked below.

Give it a watch there, sure why not? It might be a bit of an abomination, but sure look, what’s the worst that can happen?

This week’s model is, finally, the last model from my most beaten up Dogs of War unit, the banner bearer from Brazanga’s Besiegers. This poor guy lost his shield and his banner over the attic years.

To replace the pole I drilled and clipped out what was left of the original banner pole and replaced it with a length of 1mm brass wire. In retrospect, this is probably slightly too narrow, 1.5 mm might have been closer to the original.

The original banner top was a tower, long since lost too. I replaced that with a wolf’s head from a spare Empire Knight Model. Wolves at the gate indeed!

And finally the shield. After weeks of frustration, Emiel appeared with one in his hand and said “Are you looking for THIS?” It arrived on Monday evening and got a bit of a speed paint, to be honest, to be done in time for the end of quarter.

With him done, the Dogs of War (or at least the childhood ones) are fully done.

The disappointment of this week was that with all of the time I spend on the video planning and shooting this week, I didn’t have time to finish the other model that Emiel very generously sent me. Although, he does look pretty damned dapper in pure white with just his metals painted!

It was a mixed bag of classic metal models for quarter one of year 3, all presented here in  one place for your delectation.

Well, that’s it from me for another week and another quarter. Please do join me next week for the quarter two planning, and the decision on next quarter’s targets. Will it be High Elves, Space Marines or Genestealer Cults?

See you then, best eggs!

  3. What a fantasic Quarter – well done indeed! I enjoyed the video too – it was a lovely summary of how you got into the game, and you shoulld be rightfully proud of that fantastic-looking DoW army.

    Those Dark Eldar you mentioned… Are they the first iteration released during 3E?

    1. They are indeed! I think I got the codex, a raider, 10 warriors, 5 incubi, 5 wyches, 5 scourges and an Archon. The plastics (raider and warriors) are beyond repair for sure, but the metals seem mostly intact!

      1. Ah, nice! I wasn’t too keen on them when they first released, but I came to really like them later on; my view of them changed a lot when the Studio repainted their army in the much more coherent dark green army scheme that’s still used today.

        The Raider is probably worth some effort to try and save, even if you have to make some replacement parts or such. They are tricky to get in any decent repair these days, and the plastic used in 3E was softer and less dense that that used in 4E onwards, so they can be a bit delicate. As the DE units and their vehicles are somewhat individual, they are forgiving of variation, and so spare plastic warrior parts (or the crouching metal heavy weapon warriors) are a good way of replacing damaged or missing crew and weapons without them looking out of place.

        The warriors are not very difficult or expensive to find second-hand (even the metal heavy and special weapons), and if yours are beyond repair, then getting 10-15 to complete and round out the force might not be a bad idea (except in reducing the backlog of course!).

        If you ever fancy plating these in 2E, then luckily they translate quite well to “counts-as” Eldar:

        Archon = Farseer

        Warriors = Guardians

        Wyches = Banshees

        Incubi = Striking Scorpions

        Scourges = Swooping Hawks

        Raider = either Vyper (if left empty) or Falcon

        If you count the Raider as a Falcon, that comes out to about 900pts in 2E without wargear or upgrades, and would make a nice little army to play a game with.

        I hope you find these models fun to do, and I look forward to seeing them. 😀
