Ciao a tutti! Welcome back to Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer mini painting, productivity and accountability blog. After a few weeks of disruption, things finally feel back on track at Hammer the Backlog central. If you are new here, having been lured in by pictures of retro Wargahammer models, then let me explain. In this project I am painting nearly 30 years worth of collected, some might say hoarded, tabletop wargaming minis using a pretty rigid system of record keeping, scorecards and weekly updates, heavily inspired by, but legally separate from, the Entrepreneurial Operating System.
So each week we take a look at the weekly progress scorecard, check where we are on the quarter’s targets and then have a look at the week’s painted models. Finally, we wrap up with any odds and ends. Let’s bloody well get to it.
SCORECARD
Well, would you look at that! Back in the green, finally! With my lovely flying Italians painted this week, and each of them counting as two points, we have a lovely fat 10 in the models finished column! Once again, it is going to be a bit of a tight one this week. As I write this, the models aren’t finished. The flying Italians turned out to be quite complicated to paint, with their intricate winged backpacks, as well as the fact that I did them in subassemblies, without nice simple bases to hold on to.
They ended up on cocktail sticks, which they seriously did not want to stay attached to! But sure lookit, if you are reading this I got there in the end!

All the rest is nicely on track, and with these lads finished there is literally one model, my Brazanga’s Besiegers banner bearer, to finish to get my childhood Dogs of War army done.
I think I am going to split my 5 Kroxigors (2 points each) into a week of 3 (6 points) and a week of 2 (4 points), leaving space in the 4 point week to get him done!
THIS WEEK’S MODELS

So this week’s finished models are five winged Italian fellas, on Da Vinci-esque flying machines. The machines themselves were complex enough to paint, you can read all about them in last week’s update.
The fellas on the other hand, were kinda straightforward and at the same time a little bit perplexing.

From the straightforward side, they are normal sized men, not overly complicated, with red tunics, green pants, black leather straps, cream undershirts, bronze helmets and crossbows. Easy-peasy, all right, bang, square in the middle of my wheelhouse.
Where it got a little bit complicated was their relationship with the machines. The large, flat panels of the machines cover up a lot of the back of the models, meaning that I didn’t want to spend forever painting bits of the models that would never be seen.

The other, really quite strange thing about painting these models was their orientation. No, not that type of orientation! These guys are essentially lying down flat on their stomachs. They will only ever be about an inch off of the table top, so although you can see the models in full detail if you pick them up, nine times out of ten all people are going to see is their head, shoulder and side profile! Very different from my usual painting!
Anyway, they are done and they feel nice and secure on their bases now.
Looking at them with the rest of the army I feel like two points each wasn’t quite enough to do them justice. Another week to do some more highlights and to take down the starkness of the white wings might have been nice, but the backlog must be hammered, so onwards and upwards!
I FORGOT I WAS A WARHAMMER MAN
So, I do have a few other interests outside Hammer the Backlog. One of those interests is my podcast, Sure Look, Sure Listen: The Podcast that takes a pop at culture. It is Ireland’s longest running and most popular (citation missing) comic book, movie and TV podcast. It is, generally speaking, nothing to do with Warhammer, unless Warhammer happens to be in the pop culture zeitgeist that week.
Well this week we did talk about Warhammer, and to my amusement I completely forgot I had a Warhammer themed blog, instagram account and Youtube channel, all with a decent following!
Give it a listen below, if you are in any way interested in that sort of thing!
Well, that’s it from me for this week. I hope you’ll join me next week for the finished Dogs of War army shots and the first week back with the slimy green lizards!
Best eggs!
