Quarter 1 Week 3 Update: Get in the Bag

Hi there! Welcome back to Hammer the Backlog, the weekly warhammer (and other) table top mini painting, productivity and accountability blog. It’s week 3 of year 3 of the project, and things are going well, a tiny little dose of the ‘rona notwithstanding. As I am preparing to pop off for a couple of weeks for a holiday pretty soon, it was a busy week of getting multiple projects finished, started or … middled, I suppose?

Let’s start, as we do every week, with a look at the scorecard.

Another week without the official scorecard working. I guess if Instant Agency Tools doesn’t sort it out quickly, I’m going to have to look at making a custom template to get this fixed for future updates?

Obviously, there is no green and red this week until the email system is fixed, but please do go ahead and imagine that everything is in the green, since in fact, it is.

Models Finished6
Blog Post1

With Golgfag’s full set of five models fully painted, that counts as 6 hammer the backlog points this week, and ten combined over the last two weeks.

Even more exciting, it’s another Dogs of War unit finished. My teenaged, splurge spend, dream Dogs of War army is very nearly finished. Only 6 crossbowmen and the tricky birdmen left to go to get everything I bought back then completely done.

Look at this, admittedly very unprofessional, photo!

This week’s models are the last 3 models from Golgfag’s Mercenary Ogres, which I bought in 1998.

The first challenge to tackle was that the banner bearer didn’t come with the right head when I bought this set.It did come with 2 heads for one of the normal ogres though. So the first thing to do this week was to find a hat to differentiate the two matching ogres heads. I was planning to use an orc helmet of some sort, or possibly even an Ork Nob head. But as it turns out, I have very few orc models and couldn’t find one to fit.

In the end I used a pistoleer head from the old plastic empire kit, chopping off the helmet, filing down the Ogre’s head and sticking them together. It ended up giving him an old-timey British bobby look, I think.

The drummer was my least favourite model of the five of these, mostly due to the fact he is the least “dressed”. Golgfag himself has a nice coat to work with, his striped pants and helmet, all giving different textures and materials. The drummer is just covered in this weird leather/fur/ material I don’t understand.

The guy with the helmet made from the saucepan is an early contender for my favourite model of the year.

The banner itself was in a pretty bad state. It’s a terrible banner to be honest. Straight out of the box it is sticky all the way down, not long enough to fold cover on itself and too long to sit comfortably. I was able to mostly salvage it with a bit of rubbing alcohol, taking away most of the stickiness. Luckily, even though it is in a rough enough state, I think that fits ogres pretty well.

For next week, I’m currently thinking I am going to redo my unit of Brazanga’s Besiegers. These models are pretty close to the line for being too good to strip and repaint, but I have decided I am going to do it for consistency and to clean up mould lines and missing parts.

The biggest issue with next week’s models is that the banner pole from the banner bearer and the three crossbow men’s crossbows are all missing in action. Obviously the banner pole can be replaced with a bit of brass rod, which I might have to order in.

And the crossbowmen might be missing their crossbows, but since I have a unit of pizarro’s lost legion with pikes, I have a ton of metal, era appropriate crossbows that will only need a little work to make fit.

Well, that’s it from me for another week, see you next Thursday for some heavily armoured crossbowmen!

Best eggs!

  1. Lovely models all across the board! And great job making them look their best with your paint job as always!

I’m so glad you’re back in fantasy territory; you should consider hammering down that 40k nonsense with an actual hammer! 😉
