Quarter 3 Week 3 Update: Oh Man, My Back

Thank you very much for stopping by Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer (mostly) miniature painting, productivity and accountability blog. Last week brought us a dose of the flu to battle through, this week it was an unrelated back injury and sciatica that decided that the project itself wasn’t quite challenging enough. Did I manage to ignore the pain and get five more models from my 25 year backlog of unpainted minis done? Read on, oh intrigued one, to find out.

Yes. Yes I did. Well, I’m pretty sure I did. Sometimes the nature of my work and personal schedule mean that I actually write these blogs before I have put the finishing touches on the model. But after 80ish weeks of Hammering the Backlog, I think I have a pretty decent handle on knowing what’s achievable and what isn’t. The amount of time I actually spent painting this week was lower than in other weeks, since sitting still is a bit of a challenge. (On a related note, not sitting still, standing up and lying down are also challenging). But, although I was a little bit mean to these Orc Blood Bowl players for being simple chunks of plastic last week, this week I really appreciated the simplicity!

So with 6 Orcs painted, that is the Blood Bowl target at exactly 50%. Should I paint five next week, or power through and do all six, giving me a clean run on 40k stuff for the rest of the quarter? The remaining models are the more complex ones, but it is probably more efficient to do them as one group, right?

This week’s models were the last four line orcs and one thrower. The line orcs I painted in pretty much exactly the same scheme as last week.

The thrower was painted in exactly the same way, just with more exposed flesh and less armour.

Another week of great fun, simple, monopose models!

Next week we have two Black Orcs who have a lot more going on on the models, so they should be fun!

So with the 40k part of the year rapidly approaching, I have a bit of a quandary to face. One that has faced many hobbyists. What bases am I going to use? I’ve been pretty happy over the last 18 months with my basing schemes.

My 4th edition warhammer fantasy bases are all based with fine sand and warboss green, replicating the Goblin Green look of the early 90s.

My 5th edition warhammer fantasy armies are based with Loren Forest and medium grit sand, looking more like a flocked base from 5th edition.

My Blackstone Fortress minis are all based on individually painted plain bases with Blackstone Fortress style lighting.

My pre-existing early to mid 2000’s Chaos space marine army is based on brown fields, as was the grim dark style of the time.

I like the concept of matching my basing style to the era that the models were released in or inspired by. The original Dark Vengeance used the brown field bases that were typical of the time. I find these bases a little flat and uninteresting. I think I’d prefer to do metallic bases, like a hive city or a spaceship. But this will add substantially to the work for the quarter and not be super era appropriate.

It would also mean that I have a second chaos marine army with a totally different basing scheme to my pre-existing one. But! It would also mean that I can use the Dark Angels Terminators in games of Space Hulk, and use the chaos cultists in our games of dark heresy. Oh, the quandary! I tell you what, I’m going to pop into GW tomorrow and see what they have in terms of industrial bases.

Well, thanks for reading this far! I’ll see you next week for the next set of Blood Bowl Orcs.

Cheers, you are good eggs!
