Green day? Green bloody month more like it! Welcome back to Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer (mostly) mini painting, productivity and accountability blog. I am Mick, the one who Hammers the Backlog. Please join me as we pass the midway point for yet another project and have an exceptionally busy week in real life.
SCORECARD

Another week fully in the green, despite the fact that this weekend was my lovely lady wife’s birthday, and I had a marathon to run. Luckily I managed to pump a good bit of work into this week’s model, the second Deff Kopta, on Thursday and Friday evening, getting it to about halfway done before Sunday morning even rolled around.
Things were helped along quite nicely by, firstly, the fact that this was my second Deff Kopta, so there was very little learning and figuring out what to do this time, and by the fact that I went for a more metallic than pure red look for this week’s model. The metals are definitely easier to get done quickly than the reds, even if the reds are supposed to look messy and rushed and “Orky”.
That leaves a mere 3 weeks of work left on the main rock of the quarter, to get the
Assault on Black Reach Orks painted, photographed and online.
That’s week 8 and 9 to finish off the last 10 boys, and week 10 for the final Deff Kopta. Week 11 might just be used to dig out that metal Ork model I have somewhere in the pile. I think I assumed it was Captain Badrukk, but looking at the model online now I’m not sure it is, and I have no idea why I would have bought him in the first place.
Check back next week to see what the model actually is!

Since I then have nearly 3 weeks free of Orks, in the lead up to Christmas, I might treat myself and tackle my brand new Arvus lighter. I have this idea of putting it in a desert diorama and having two kinda firefly, kinda rebel scum characters being inspected by some local authoritarian heavies, possibly represented by a brand new box of Palatine Enforcers (big birthday thanks, General Sakamoto!). Can anymore recommend some kinda sexy, rogueish pilot or smuggler minis that would fit in with a kinda necromunda/mad max vibe?
THIS WEEK’S MODEL

The second Deff Kopta is done and dusted. Since these were built in 2008 ish, I don’t really remember how they came on the sprue, but it is very interesting that they are almost exact copies of each other, but also quite different in detail in some areas. I have no idea how they did that.

Since the last one was a little too heavy on the red, in my opinion, I pulled it back this week. For balance. So this one is mostly dark metals with some red flourishes. Personally I prefer this look. For the third one, I will probably go with something between the two. A little more red than this one, but not quite as much as the first one.

To keep each kotpa unique and individual, this one didn’t get the flame graphics, he got his molded on dags painted white. At sometime over the last 20 years, I lost one of the propeller blades, I think? Thankfully, Orks!

I suppose that means the last one will get a checkerboard pattern, completing the ranks of Orky vehicle markings.
AM I GOING TO HAVE MORE TIME?
One of the major challenges of the last year was that as part of my mid life crisis (the same mid life crisis that brought us Hammer the backlog, in fact), I decided to run a marathon. So the prep for that marathon has taken up, on average, 5 to 10 hours a week of running. Never mind the recovery after a run. The last thing you want to do after a four hour run is ruin a model by trying to paint fine details when you are tired.

So anyway, I did the marathon on Sunday and didn’t die. So goal achieved. I guess that means I’m going to have 6 to 10 hours more free time a week for a while? At least until I decide to do something else stupid.
Well, that’s it from me for another week.
See you next week for the penultimate set of Ork Boys.
Best of Eggs!
