Quarter 2 Week 5 Update: Da Green Tide

Hello ‘umies! Welcome back to ‘ammer da backlog, da weekly mini paintin’, akountabilty and produktivity blog. That’s enough of that, if I do say so myself! As the nights are getting longer and darker and the laboratory is getting colder in the evenings, how am I holding up in my effort to get 30 years of unpainted Warhammer minis (mostly zoggin’ Orks, it feels like) painted up to an acceptable standard? Read on to find out.

Another week of the green tide. Five more orks done, the first of the normal ork boys, and all other commitments met. Getting the orks done was much less of a struggle this week, for some reason. I think I liked the smaller, simpler, slightly more uniform ork boys more than the ramshackle DeffKopta or the overly complex Nobs.

It was a very busy weekend, so I wasn’t able to get these lads truly started until Monday, but lunch time painting hours and a couple of solid evenings got me there in the end.

So, quick check in on the progress of the rock.

Just five normal lads! These were probably my favourite models so far from this quarter, perhaps excluding the Warboss.

I went for a slightly lighter, yellow shade on the skin than with the nobs, just by diluting the Ork  skin contrast paint with 50% contrast medium, then highlighting up through the same colours. They were a little easier to paint than the nobs as they all basically have boots, trousers, top, straps, one of two armour panels, gun and weapon. No cables or mechanical bits and pieces that needed colour scheme decisions.

They also got a lot less red than on the nobs, which I think paid off in the end. A couple of splashes of red on otherwise dark earthy outfits looks much better I think.

The faces are the highlights on these models. I actually enjoyed spending a little bit more time on each one, putting in a dark recess shade with terradon turquoise and giving the lips and ears a little bit of a glaze with kislev flesh.

I think the next set will get some different coloured casing on their guns to break up the dull metal look a little.

Thanks for reading about my orks!

See you next week for more of my orks!

Best ‘eggs!

  1. “The green tide” refers to the fantastic sea of green in your progress dashboard 😉

Excellent work on the Ork boys, I’m loving your weekly updates as you work through your backlog.
