Quarter 3 Week 4 Update: There are No Wolves on Fenris

Hi there. I hope you’ll excuse me using one of the greatest lines of world and lore building mystery ever from the annals of 40k for this week’s title. But if that doesn’t bring the readers in, what will?

Welcome back to Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer mini painting, accountability and productivity blog. I’m actually away at a real life annual planning session for my real life job as I type this this week, so please also excuse the slightly shorter than average blog.

As I said, I’m away for the night on the usual night that I finish off my painting for the week, which means a couple of longer evenings this week, and earlier mornings. I was able to get everything painted and photographed by Wednesday night, so another week fully in the green.

The really fun thing about this week was that despite having less time to spend, I enjoyed myself even more than usual.

I took this week’s projects in reverse order, painting the space marine to 100% completion before starting on the Bretonnians. I did purposefully choose the easiest of the Bretonnains for this week’s target, since I knew I’d have less time. Going for the unit leader and a mostly chainmail wearing normal guy meant less white and flesh tones to paint, and they are the most time consuming colours on these models.

It also meant not having to paint up the musician, who has more fiddly details, or the banner bearer, who needs a banner painted from scratch!

The first of this week’s models was the Space Wolf, Drenn Redblade. I was very surprised when I realised that despite my own natural leanings and colouration, this was the first Space Wolf I’ve ever painted! HIs face on the card art is quite odd, all craggly lines and stark differences in tone. I tried to replicate this a little bit on his face.

My old school leanings came through on his space wolf colours. The baby blue shoulder pad and bright red and yellow knee pad really make him stand out against his team mates, who are all of the much more sombre persuasion so far.

I have been playing around with bases so far for the deathwatch overkill team, and this is the one I’m happiest with so far. It is painted exactly the same way as I painted my Dark Angels armour last year!

Part two of the week was another two Bretonnian Men-at-arms from the batch very kindly sent to me by Merlin’s Miniatures. I went for the easiest two of the remaining batch, including the unit champion.

I absolutely love this simple little sculpt. Hold up a sword, shield and spear, he almost looks triumphantly over encumbered. Without a face to paint, I pretty much knocked him out in an evening.

Sadly, the back of his blade is probably the best painted sword I’ve ever done, and it will be hidden away in the hustle and bustle of the unit.

The more I add to this unit, the cooler they look. In fact, I only have a unit of 10, which I planned to paint up in two ranks of 5. But that’s more 6th edition thinking, right? 5th edition would have a unit of 16, ranked up four by four, wouldn’t it? I wonder if merlinsminiatures.co.uk has any more? They do you say? O could just get myself some, right? That wouldn’t be unhammering the backlog at all?

Well lookit, that’s all from me this week. See you next week I hope for two more Bretonnians and the Dark Angel character from Deathwatch Overkill!

Best of Eggs!
