Quarter 2 Week 10 Update: Plus ça Change, Plus c’est la Même Chose

Oh, hello. I didn’t see you there. You’ve caught me in the middle of writing this week’s update for Hammer the Backlog, the weekly mini painting, productivity and accountability blog. Quarter 2 of year three is coming to an end, and it has been a tough one, with the hugely detailed (and gorgeous!) Island of Blood High Elves taking up nearly the full quarter. However, they say a change is as good as a rest, so this week I went all the way back to the origins of Hammer the Backlog and painted some 5th edition Bretonnians. Join my once again as we take a look at the scorecard, the weekly progress and any issues that have come up!

Alrighty! A week fully in the green! Now, I know some of you are out there saying “But painting Mick, there are only 4 models finished, not 5”. Well, I decided to count the banner bearers as one and a half points each to make up for the extra work of dealing with paper banners! Especially given how tough on myself I was with the reaver knights and how many points they were, I have absolutely no shame in counting these 4 little frenchies as 5.

I also gave the garage, the studio, the sanctum, the laboratoire (take your pick) a solid spring clean this week with my lovely lady wife. This was much needed, and not only made more room, but also served as a nice soft reset after the elf infantry and cavalry. It also gave me the room, both physical and metal, to take some nice pictures of my army in progress for the quarter, to spam on social media!

We have only one small thing off track this month, which is that technically the Bretonnian BSB Grail Knight should have been painted by now. This would have been done this week, if the Reaver Knights had take the two weeks I thought they would rather than three. No need to worry yet, I’ll get him done next week, then have the last two weeks of the year to do the Prince on Griffon.

A lovely little palette cleanser this week. After weeks of highly detailed modern plastic models, I got my hands of 4 of the wonkiest, most mid-90s models you could possibly imagine. I know that, technically, these are squire command groups, not bowmen command groups, but beggars can’t be choosers. And beggars also can’t be spending €30 per model on 8 point models!

I decided not to paint up the leader models, as I think they will end up in squire units eventually, and they are lacking the distinctive wide brimmed hats of the bowmen.

One set of these was done in the black, red and leather colour of my first set of bowmen. The other set was done in the yellow, black and red of the second unit.

These models were released again as part of the old world, possibly the oldest models that GW still sell. But they do come with lovely paper banners, which I decided to use since they already match the colour scheme of the two units.

Not a lot else to report on these, to be honest! All of the colour scheme are back in the first quarter of the first year of Hammer the Backlog, if you are interested in reading back that far!

Next week will be taken up with getting the Bretonnian Battle Standard Bearer painted. Since he is both a Grail Knight, and will have a hand painted banner, he is going to be an easy 5 points worth of effort.

Any spare time will be spent putting together some more bits of scenery for the upcoming battle report. I’ve decided to do it as an edge of the jungle theme, where the Bretonnians have been clearing the jungle for wood and farmland, so I’m going to make some fences and fields of crops to contrast to the jungle foliage and swamp terrain on the lizardmen side!

That’s it from me for another week. See you next week for a glorious Knightly throwback.

  1. These look great, well done! 😀

I like the typical Perry attention to detail on the sculpts too – the little leather wrist guards on the inside of the left arm to protect the wrist from the bowstring for example, even on the plastic figures.

I was on the fence about getting some of the Squires (their high price is a big turn-off…), but after seeing yours I may try and get some after all. You know, <ahem>, whilst I still can. 😉

Meanwhile, the HE are really coming along – Asarnil fits right in, and the old 6E bowmen (relegated to the rear I see…!) also fill out the little force nicely.

Actually, seeing your HE all together like that, in the mostly white and silver scheme, reminds of the classic Paul Dainton artwork:

In turn, I was inspired by that same artwork many years ago, and so rather than the usual purples, I chose cold black, teals, and small red accents to do my Dark Elves in:

Unfortunately, despite starting *three* more units for this army, I then got distracted by and moved onto different projects, and so I never completed the other units or did any more on this army. It’s a shame, as I like really like the Chris Fitzpatrick models for 6E, and I collected pretty much a whole army of the figures. Maybe I’ll be motivated by your efforts, and try to at least compelete the units I started…? Hmm, we’ll see; I’m a pretty slow painter! 😉

    1. This got sorted into spam for some reason! It couldn’t be more on topic! That image was actaully a big part of redefining how I thought of high elves post the red era. I do think that the complely white look would be a bit too washed out on real models, but I might paint a small unit in those colours some day! I bet your dark elves would look favulous matched up against them
