Whatca lookin’ at, wimp? Dis is ‘Ammer da Backlog, da weekly War ‘ammer mini paintin’ blog.
Well now, that’s quite enough of that, if I do say so myself. You have joined me just in time for another update of the weekly mini painting, productivity and accountability blog. At the start of a new quarter, and a new year, enthusiasm and motivation are high and things are going swimmingly. Or maybe the motivation is coming from finally getting some nice paint on these models that I’ve had since 1997?
SCORECARD
So first of all, you may have to excuse me if the scorecard isn’t actually there this week. Instant agency tools, the website that I use to track the Hammer the Backlog project, has temporarily (I hope) turned off the email functionality from the website, meaning I might have to just type this week’s scorecard out. Not ideal, and it has gone on this week’s issues list on, ironically enough, instant agency tools.

I’ve decided to shoot them an email and ask them to turn it back on!

The big one this week is 5 Hammer the Backlog points of effort to get the 2 “normal” ogres finished and the musician half painted. That leaves 5 htb points worth of effort to get Golgfag himself and the banner bearer painted next week, and the musician finished.
In another small update, I’ve taken an evening or two off of painting over the last couple of weeks because my lower back was starting to hurt, as well as my butt-muscle. I have a high desk in the painting studio and the chair I’ve been using was a low, metal, garden chair. So I treated myself to a height adjustable padded swivel chair on wheels! Nice.

I decided I deserved a little treat since the Hammer the Backlog Youtube channel just passed the eligibility requirements to apply for monetisation! Expect a rapid decline in quality from here on out!

THIS WEEK’S MODELS
A real treat for this week, with 2 out of the 5 og Golgfag’s Mercenary Ogre’s finally painted to a standard I’m relatively happy with!

I bought this box set in 1997 or 1998 in my initial spurt of young man with a little bit of money / Warhammer enthusiasm. Unlike a lot of the models I bought then, I did actually paint these to a standard I was pretty happy with at the time. However, the intervening 25 years in boxes and attics have not been kind to them, they were pretty badly beaten up and chipped.

A quick dunk in the biostrip later and they were practically brand new.
One of the reasons I think I found dogs of war difficult to paint in the 90s was that they came out at an awkward time for the GW studio painting team. They had moved away from the red period / 4th edition of bright and saturated colours, but hadn’t quite settled into the proper “grimdark” that I think the 6th edition represented. Sure, some armies (Bretonnians and Lizards, I’m looking at you) were bright and colourful to get away with it, but I have always found the official dogs of war box art to be a little muddy for my taste.

Lots of browns and unsaturated reds are not super fun for me to paint. So rather than copying that, I decided to base my lads on the 4th edition look, especially since the mercenary Ogres from Dark Omen were my favourite unit.

I like the idea that these lads started out fairly “human” in their dress and through combat, necessity and laziness, have ended up patching up and covering themselves in more “ad-hoc” clothing and armour.

Great fun to paint, if you ask me!
NEXT WEEK’S MODELS
When I bought this set in 1997 (or 98), it came with the wrong head. The distinctive banner bearer’s head was missing, replaced with a second copy of the Orge’s head that I like to call Alan. I didn’t know back then that I could have brought it into a GW shop and they probably would have given me a whole new ogre.
Do you think it would be worth trying now?
Anyway, I think with a little bit of greenstuff, or maybe a helmet from the pile of shame, I might be able to make something work. Unless anyone out there has an STL I could print?
Well, that’s all for this week. I’m off to eat anything I can get my hands on.
Thanks for reading all of this, you are the best egg.
