Quarter 4 Week 10 Update: Limited Edition

Well if it isn’t the beloved reader, returned once again to the inner sanctum of Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer Mini painting, productivity and accountability blog. This week, confess your sins of unproductivity and be cleansed at the altar of getting shit done. Take my hand as I guide you on a spiritual journey through this week’s scorecard, model updates and all the other bits and bobs. Prepare yourself!

Week 10 of 12 in the bag this week, and another week in the green! I was hoping to get a few more models done, to be honest, especially the 2nd edition Chaos Space Marines I started last week, but this week’s model ended up being a good deal more complicated than I thought he was going to be, and therefore taking up pretty much all of this week’s painting time.

With all of that said, however, I did manage to get him done to a standard that I would be happy enough to call “done”. I might, might, do a few more touch ups on him before the end of the quarter now that I have two spare weeks up for grabs. On the other hand, I might not.

The last target model of the quarter, and the year, is the special edition Dark Angels Chaplain, Seraphanondiculous. I honestly had no idea when I started him, quite how rare and sought after this model was!

I’m a bit torn on him to be honest. He definitely has a lot going for him. (Too much?) He is a very detailed model, with bits hidden everywhere. He has a flipping frag grenade just under his arm bit in the depths of the folds of his cloak, for the emperor’s sake. The text on his cape is totally legible, which for an oldschooler like me still feels like a brand new magical technology.

I think my main pet peeve with this guy, and the reason I have never been strongly drawn to this model, is the smoke coming off his back pack. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I don’t love the idea of non solid parts being modelled on my models. Energy effects, water, smoke, heck, even fire. I’d prefer to imagine those things, or maybe do something creative like using transparent resin for water or energy effects.

I strongly considered cutting these off! I think the model would suit my sensibilities a bit more, but probably look a bit squat and wide without them. Maybe I should have replaced them with a dark angles topper instead?

Since I kept the smoke on, I aimed for a smooth contrast paint job. Starting from a Corax White basecoat, I applied a Soulblight Grey wash all over. Once dried, I darkened the deepest spots with Basilicanum Grey for a ‘lowlight’ effect. Shade might not be the right term here, as the dark areas of the smoke aren’t typical shadows but rather darker hues to suggest depth.

He was a challenging paint job, with multiple layers and pretty much every colour I’ve used in this army so far all on the one model!

With the limited edition Chaplain in the bag, the big, main painting target of this quarter is done. All of the Dark Angels side of the 2012 Dark Vengeance Boxed set painted! Here, have a quick look at the whole gang before I take some proper group photos of the whole boxed set next week.

This also means that I get to tick off the annual target of getting Dark Vengeance painted. Nice.

As with last year, I definitely found the 40 part of the year a bigger struggle in terms of motivation and excitement. I think Dark Vengeance was a little easier than Blackstone Fortress because the Dark Angels are interesting to paint, with different schemes for the tactical squads, deathwing and ravenwing. Much easier than painting an entire army of Ultramarines, I would say.

So, with all of that done, there is only the meta target for this quarter left to round out the year. The plan is to get two videos made for the youtube channel this weekend. Just like last year I will be splitting the end of year review into two parts.

Part 1 will be the Quarter 4 review and the year end review. That should be out on the 13th of July.

Part 2 will be the Year 3 Planning session and Quarter 1 Target Setting session. I’m hoping to have that online by the 20th of July, just in time for week one of year 3.

At the moment, it looks like Deathwatch Overkill has it in the bag for the 40k project next year, although there is some competition from Assault on Black Reach.

On the Fantasy side, I have lots of 5th edition metals that I would love to get finished, although they are lacking a cohesive theme (other than being all fifth edition metals), as well as substantial (SUBSTANTIAL!) armies of 7th edition Empire and 8th Edition High elves.

Well, that’s it for me for this week. See you next week for some bits and bobs and hopefully some nice pictures of the completed Dark Vengeance Set.

You are the best eggs!
