Hello there. Welcome back to Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer miniature painting, accountability and productivity blog where I try to find joy in the pile of unpainted grey models that I’ve accumulated over the 30 years of collecting various tabletop wargaming miniatures. The end of quarter 4, and therefore year one, is rapidly approaching. Only two full models left to go, then the usual end of year odds and ends, and maybe some bit and bobs. We’ll see. But only if you’re good. Ask your mother.
SCORECARD

Another week in the green! Another week of confusion. Look, I don’t know if I keep miscounting, or if my slightly lower than usual enthusiasm for this quarter’s project is making me a bit careless, but I keep losing track of how many weeks are left in this quarter. I was utterly convinced that there were 11 weeks before June 13th. But if this is week 9, then there are actually 3 weeks left to go, making it a 12 week quarter. I’ll probably never figure out how I got this mixed up, but so be it! An extra week for Bits and Bobs won’t go amiss!
With everything in the green and only two models left to go, I started having a bit of time back to get other things done. One of those was to order a Dark Angels transfer sheet. I’m going to use some of my freed up time over the next couple of weeks to get squad and company markings on everything I’ve painted so far.

I’ve also noticed a few spots on the models I’ve done this quarter that I’d like to give a bit more attention. The main thing that jumps out is that I didn’t do anything with the screens on the Ravenwing bikers. I’ll go back over them when I have a spare half hour. I won’t be counting anything like this on the scorecard over the next couple of weeks, that would be scummy, since I’ve already claimed the points for finishing them!
I’d like to get one bits and bobs project done before I head into the studio to record the quarterly review. Speaking of, I think the best way to handle it this month is to have two videos. Video one will be the quarterly review and annual review and video two will be the annual planning and quarter 1 video for year 3!
THIS WEEK’S MODEL

No, your eyes do not deceive you, this is not an Ultramarine! This week’s model is the Dark Angels Librarian, Tumiel, from the Dark Vengeance box set in 2012.

These Dank Angels character models are all really just elaborate display plinths for their weapons, which I have enjoyed painting the most.
This guy’s sword was painted exactly the same way as the other power swords in the set, then the runes were painted over with corax white and painted with contrast yellow paints. They are definitely yellow. Any appearance of a non-metallic metal gold effect is purely accidental.

For the armour I went with a slightly darker blue than an ultramarine, starting with corax white again, then leviadon blue, talassar blue, caledor blue edge highlights and ulthuan grey dots. I’m pretty happy with the results, but if I was spending more time on him and painting him to the best of my abilities I would definitely glaze some darker blue into the shadows for more contrast.

I more or less went with the box art again for this guy, since I’m pretty much doing the Dark Angels side of the box as written.
BITS AND BOBS
Look, lads, listen. It’s no secret that this project has been super inspiring for me. One of the main sources of angst has been that the models I’m painting are “old skool” i.e they are non-primaris marines. The problem there is that they are tickling my wickle for retro space marine styleings, but not quite getting the job done in terms of retro fun and satisfaction.
That’s why I dug this little gem out.

This is a mid 90’s box of plastic chaos space marines with a few metal bits and bobs thrown in. I got these in the mid 2000’s with the intention of adding them to my black legion, after I painted up this power first guy and thought it was cool.

Like everything that I’ve thought was cool, thought, I got distracted and moved on to something else.

Now I’m thinking that I’ll use my Bits and Bobs week to paint them up in all of their retro glory, 2nd edition paint schemes and goblin green bases and all.
The only question?

What legion? Answers in the comments please!
Thanks for reading this far. See you next Thursday for the last model from Dark Vengeance!
Best Eggs!
