Quarter 4 Week 3 Update: Like a Phoenix, I am Risen!

Welcome back to Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer Mini painting, accountability and productivity blog, where I aim to get 25 years worth of accumulated tabletop wargames miniatures painted before the Solar system is squashed flat by extra-dimensional aliens. Not that that is likely to happen. I don’t have any insider information, if that’s what you’re thinking. Why do you look so worried?

Last week was probably the worst week for the Hammer the Backlog project since I started it nearly two years ago, with a shocking series of unfortunate events meaning I got no models finished, no photographs taken and didn’t, if we are being honest with ourselves, even update the blog.

Will this week’s scorecard show that I have recovered from that slip up, or is this the precipice of the whole thing falling apart?

Let’s look at this weeks’ (and last weeks’) scorecard to see.

Well, kinda! Let’s have a look at last week first. A series of unfortunate events meant that I lost Wednesday and Thursday to running around to medical appointments. That left last week’s models about 80% done, but no photos taken, obviously.

So, carrying on to this week had options. 1: Finish last week’s models and move on to this week, getting them all done in one week. 2: Write off last week, finish last week’s models this week.

In the end, since I was flipping exhausted and didn’t need the pressure of finishing 11 points worth of models, I went with option 2. In the end that left me with a relatively pleasant and stress free week of getting the three terminators done to a decent standard, but also left me without progress shots for Instagram for the first time in months!

I should be back on track now, even though it’s a short quarter.

This week’s models are this week’s models and last week’s models. The last three deathwing terminators from the Dark Vengeance boxed set.

Once again, they were pretty fun to paint. One of them is a double, which I remember being slightly disappointed with when this set came out. I differentiated them with heraldry and slightly different equipment colours.

If I was doing these again from scratch, I think I would do a better job. I decided to work with the Skeleton Horde contrast base that was on them from a few years ago when I was eager to give contrast a try, and it was a bit patchier and with more “coffee stains” than they would have if I painted them these days. I think it is hidden well enough by the highlights and all the detailed colours, but I could definitely do a better job on bone armour starting from scratch in 2024.

While I was painting these I was constantly reminded that my favourite thing about this set when it came out was that the terminators in the set could so easily fill in for Squad Lorenzo from Space Hulk.

Sergeant with power sword, check. Marine with assault cannon, check. Chainfist marine, check. Two normies; check and check. The poses are even quite reminiscent. This potential use of the marines is one of the major reasons that this whole set is on industrial/spaceship bases, rather than the traditional brown earth battlefields bases of 2012.

So, what’s next? Whatever I decide to do next week, I have some work and some choices to make. If I start on the three Ravenwing bikers, then at least I know what colour scheme I will be going with. They will get a contrast style neutral black, as opposed to the cool black that I used for the black legion. However! I will need to 3D print some appropriate bike bases to match the rest of the army. I don’t think GW does spaceship style bases for bike sized models?

On the other hand, if I move on to the tacticals, I have a big decision to make. I have gone for a contrast heavy approach to painting this set. I have never done a dark angel scheme in contrast. Do I go for the contrast approach or should I just start with a good old fashioned Caliban green spray? I definitely should have done a test model!

Ah well, live and learn!

Thanks for reading all of that! See you next week with either 3 half painted Ravenwing bikers or 5 finished tactical marines!

Best eggs!
