Quarter 3 Week 12 Update: Change of Plans!

Hi, it’s me again! Welcome back for another week of Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer mini painting, accountability and productivity blog in which I, Mick, attempt to paint my entire backlog of 25+ years of unpainted Warhammer miniatures before I forget how. As we come to the end of quarter 3 of the second year of the project, I have been struggling through Dark Vengeance, the 2012 Warhammer 40,000 starter set. It’s an awesome set, and was the birth of the modern era of 40k models I reckon, but they are so detail packed compared to the retro models I’ve otherwise been painting.

More green than can realistically be seen! Another clean sweep for the week, despite another last minute change of plans. So what plans did I change this week? Well, cast your mind back to last week where I said I was going to finish the last two Chosen and the Champion. Well. I didn’t do that. The sheer amount of trim on these models means that they are taking at least 5 hours each, probably more. So I had to ditch out of painting the last chosen after getting his blacks and metals done and save his trim for next week.

So instead I finished the Champion, whose trim I had already basecoated, and fully painted one of the two remaining Chosen.

This pushes half of the last chosen and the Chaos Lord to next week. So about 8 Hammer the Backlog points (or about 16 hours) worth of painting on next week’s plate?

Secondly, I have finally managed to actually schedule the Blood Bowl game with Jim for this Saturday evening. That gives me the weekend to play the game, write a script, film the match report and edit everything together.

Why am I pushing so much to next week? Well, needs must to some degree. Next Thursday is the deadline for what has been a very dense and challenging quarter. But also, it’s a public holiday on Monday in Ireland, giving me an extended long weekend to play around with. It is still going to be tight getting everything done, and the quarterly wrap up video will have to be planned and filmed very quickly after that, but it looks like we might just pull everything out of the bag in the end.

So this week’s models are nearly as defined by what I didn’t do as what I did. The first model was this open posed lightning claw chosen. I picked him because I thought he would be nice and simple, with a wide open pose and not a lot of extra detail. No cape or tentacles or guns to worry about. But! Holy moly does he have a lot of trim. The trim on this guy alone was at least 3 hours worth of painting. His unique point is that he has these spikes “growing” out of his armour. They were pretty simple to paint by just doing his black armour as normal and painting them as bone. Job done. He is the only model in the group that didn’t have an “Eye” that I could paint in the Eye of Horus colours, or at least none that I could find.

The model I didn’t finish was the horned one with the power axe. He looked simple enough, but then I noticed that half of his trim is bone, almost with a bit of a Legion of the Damned vibe. The cognitive load it would have taken to be painting such a different model at the same time means that he gets pushed to next week.

The last model of this week is the Chosen Champion. This guy gives off real Dark Apostle vibes with his mace and bare head. He was quite fun to paint with his lovely, luxurious cloak covering up most of his backside and therefore nearly halving the amount of trim and armour to be painted! I’ve never been so happy to paint a big, red cloak.

My favourite little detail on this guy is the chaotic third eye on his forehead, which I painted to match all of the rest of the eyes in this set, including the eyes on my Hellbrute from a few weeks ago.

So, a busy week ahead with the remaining left to do:

Friday: Clean up and base Chaos Lord

Saturday: Paint Lord and Chosen

Saturday Evening: Play Bloodbowl Game

Sunday: Finish Painting Chosen, get Lord to 50%

Monday: Travel to studio and record Blood Bowl report. Get Lord to 75%

Tuesday: Get Blood Bowl Match report 50% edited

Wednesday: Finish Lord

Thursday: Finish Edit and Upload Video

Phew!

Thanks for reading this far, see you next week. I hope!

You are the best eggs!
