Quarter 1 Week 12 Update: Cutting it Close!

Hello and welcome back to a rather inglorious week for Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer miniature painting, productivity and accountability blog. This week was not a fabulous one for backlog hammering, with too many things piling up, leading to a bit of a motivation crash and a bit of red in the ledger. Let’s take a look, as always, at the weekly scorecard and the rocks and see what went wrong, and if the quarter can be saved.

The most glaring and obvious thing that went wrong this week is that big, ugly, red zero in the Models Finished column. That’s not to say I didn’t do any painting, in fact I did quite a lot, but just that I didn’t get anything finished to a standard that was ready to be photographed and uploaded. Luckily, I got the Galloper gun rider, horse, carriage and gun to about 90% done, so I have the utmost confidence that they will be finished by tomorrow or Saturday at the latest and the rock’s painting target will be met just on time. I may even have a tiny bit of time to do one bit or bob, if I’m lucky.

A large part of why painting struggled this week is that I am a terribly slow video editor. Although I managed to get the learn to play video uploaded, it took most of this week’s painting time, and then when it was finished I found that my motivation to paint was really gone! I don’t know if it was because of this “high pressure” (in terms of a hobby blog, not actually high pressure) week, the fact that I don’t find either horses or warmachines particularly interesting to paint or the fact that we are only a week away from the end of this project that hit the motivation the hardest. It might have been a combination of all three.

If I can get the guns finished before this weekend, I will be able to film the quarterly review video this weekend, edit the Wrath of Txlatlan battle report in the evenings and still hit all of the rocks for the quarter. Wish me luck!

Even though I didn’t get any models finished this week, I did make rather significant progress on the overall goals for the target by getting the Learn to Play video edited and uploaded. Here it is, for your delectation.

Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition Boxed Set and Learn to Play!

This rock has taught me a lot of things. First of all, video editing is hard! It took ages sifting through footage, reshooting, slowing down shots and fudging stuff to produce the semi coherent end product. Feedback seems to be mostly positive, thankfully, since I was quite intimidated to start the second, more complex, video.

Second, don’t be afraid to wear your inspiration on your sleeve. I was completely stuck with how to do this until I rewatched Ed’s first few videos from Minisodes and it all clicked together!

Since I didn’t get much painting done this week, I thought I would pop in some of the smaller or growing youtube channels that have inspired or guided me growing Hammer the Backlog, along with one of my favourite videos from each of them.

MINISODES

Ed’s channel, Minisodes, has to go first! My own videos are but a fantasy tinged pale reflection of his little mini masterpieces. Check out this one first, in which he basically did exactly what I did, but with the 2nd edition 40k starter set.

ANVIL OF DOOM MINIATURES

Deet’s channel is easily one of my favourite “hit of retro warhammer” channels out there. This guy is not only one of the best eggs, but he is also picking up and painting classic 40k and fantasy models in a way that ticks all of the right boxes for anyone who enjoys this blog. Look at him painting this skelly chariot! Perfection!

THE CROWN OF COMMAND

We are all but swaddling babes in this field when compared to Josh at the Crown of Command. With a long running Youtube Channel with awesome 90’s ‘Eavy Metal style, a great podcast, a Japan based gaming community and a bustling discord community, it really is Josh’s retro Warhammer universe, the rest of us just live in it! The fact that he is also a great egg is the cherry on top.

Coming from a great instagram account that selflessly promotes anything and everything retro and square based, Tom has recently branched out and used his extensive list of contacts to get some incredible interviews done. Right, with that I suppose I’d better get back to painting and video editing. See you next week for the final touches on the Dogs of War quarter!

Good eggs!
