Thank you for coming on board with Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer mini painting, accountability and productivity blog. A truncated week this week, split by a lovely four days in real life Bretonnia means that slightly less than a full week’s models got painted, but what did get painted I am very happy with.
Let’s start the week, as per usual, with a look at the scorecard.
SCORECARD

Not a clean sweep of green this week, as a couple of things have slipped into the red. A part (the biggest part?) of the reason is that I spent most of the week in Carcassonne on a summer holiday with my lovely lady. In preparation for going away I had the choice to take a holiday week off of Hammer the Backlog, or try to cram most of a week’s work into the weekend before I left.

With the Battle for Txlatlan rock also falling behind slightly I thought it would be better to get something, rather than nothing, done. So I crammed the usual 8 hours of painting time that 3 skinks would take into Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, leaving me the rest of the week free to enjoy castles and three hour lunches. The scorecard should have been 5 this week, as I was planning on painting up another skink champion/hero, but as I showed last week, his existing paint scheme was just too good to paint over, so I just added a layer or two of highlights to his metals and repainted his base to tie him in with my own models and called him done.

The other thing that has been lagging for several weeks is that that website project is not making any progress. With all of my preparation for a holiday, going to work, jiu jitsu, podcasting, DnD and other hobbies, as well as actually hammering the backlog, I do not have the spare time or mental capacity to learn how to make a nice website. Therefore it is coming off the issues list and joining the long term issues list, where it will eventually become a rock and I won’t be able to ignore it.
THIS WEEK’S MODELS

This week’s models are the remaining skink command groups required to have a full army for the Wrath of Tlaxtlan battle report. Two champions/heroes, a standard bearer and a musician.

As I have said repeatedly, although I got Troppi Poppi here fully expecting to strip him and repaint him in one of my own schemes, I fully fell in love with both his colour scheme and his style. So not only did I not strip him, he actually influenced how I painted the rest of the groups.

The standard bearer and musician were painted exactly the same way as my previous batch of orange skinks, which is fitting since they’re going to be leading them.

The champion on the other hand was much more inspired by Troppi Poppi, getting a blue bag, a green quiver and multicoloured bangles. I then ended up going back and making the drummer’s strap a bit more colourful too. A very nice splash of colour in my otherwise very natural looking Lizardmen, if I do say so myself.
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before on the blog, but I really am committed to these Lizards being a 5th edition time capsule now. The Lizardmen and Bretonnians are probably the armies that changed the most between 5th and 6th edition, essentially getting entirely new ranges with revised aesthetics. This is not to say that I wouldn’t be interested in 6th edition, I have an Empire army from that period that is itching to get painted up, but these two armies are going to remain 5th edition exclusive.

Here is the group shot of the entire Wrath of Tlaxtlan army, ready for playing by Jim next weekend.
SOCIAL MEDIA UPDATES
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: One of the best things about this past year of Backlog Hammering has been hearing about people who have been inspired by either the blog, instagram account or youtube channel to dig out their own models and hammer away at their own backlog in some sort of structured (yet hopefully joyful) way.
The latest is Marco on Instagram. Go give https://www.instagram.com/mrc.minis/ a follow and really pile on that accountability pressure!
Anyway, as I said, I’ve been on holiday this week so please excuse the slightly truncated week. See you all next week for more Dogs of War!
